students and researchers alike with access to a range of sample preparation options. Our experienced technician Anne Hammond can manufacture both regular and polished thin sections for petrographic studies as well as disks for SEM work. These in-house capabilities insure that students and researchers have rapid access to the materials necessary to undertake their research.
In addition to thin sections the lapidary facility has the necessary equipment for the preparation of samples for whole rock geochemical analyses and work on mineral separates. These include a jaw crusher for coarse crushing and agate mills for preparing powders, as well as magnetic and heavy liquid separators. The capability also exists to manufacture oriented disks for rock magnetism studies.
As well as sample preparation work for faculty and students at Lakehead University, the Lapidary facility also undertakes commercial work for the local mining and exploration industry. Contact Anne Hammond for information about rates and availability.
